Yoga is an ancient practice originating in India that encourages an improved sense of health and well being, a feeling of peace and contentment with oneself, and an increased inner awareness. The most familiar and popular aspect of yoga in the West is hatha yoga. Hatha yoga is the physical practice of yoga which includes postures (asanas) and breathing (pranayama) practices. The Sanskrit word 'yoga' means to link, or join together. A yoga practice is designed to help one become more aware of the connection between body, mind and spirit as well as to be present in this connection with each moment. Participants are encouraged to observe themselves without judgment, move without competitiveness, embrace the practice with self acceptance, and enjoy it as a time of self discovery. As we cultivate our own inner awareness on the yoga mat, we can experience a greater sense of peace, harmony, and balance in our lives off the mat.
